I have always loved exploring living animals against patterns in the same print. This print was inspired by the owls I saw in a damask wallpaper in my childhood home. I love playing with this idea and exploring different combinations to make the print come alive and engage the viewer.
The Owl in this print was scratched directly into an aluminum plate using an etching needle, while the wallpaper pattern was hand-painted onto the plate with a barrier ground to protect the covered areas as the plate was etched with chemicals to create the pattern. The plate was then inked, the excess ink wiped away from the surface, and purple ink was applied to the surface of the plate to print the wallpaper background. The remaining black ink in the etched grooves of the image is what printed at the same time as the purple ink on the plate surface when the plate was put through the etching press. It is printed with purple and black oil-based ink on Stonehenge Archival Printmaking Paper.
This is a varied limited edition of 8 prints. Each print is signed and numbered.
